Hi folks.
Feeling a bit sad at the moment. 'Twas Hubster's birthday on Friday and still haven't managed to go out for dinner to celebrate. Thought we might have the chance tonight, but no. On standby, he's off to Africa. So sad Gil. On 'er own. Once again.
Thinking 'bout taking Monday off, chaps.

There are a couple of small snags with the job I do. The hours are horribly anti-social, an airline doesn't give a fig about your family and/or marriage - they just want the flights crewed.
All very understandable, except that we don't have the pilots to crew the program that we have. In an ecstatic bout of arm-waving and till-kerchinging, the airline secured an MoD contract to take troops out to the Middle East. Great... except we didn't have enough pilots to fly the holiday program, let alone add on these ad-hoc contracts.
So, when the phone rings and someone says 'You're the only one who can do it', it does put a bit of pressure on. They tend to say that anyway, but this time I think it was for real. I was perfectly within my rights to say, "No thanks", hang up the phone and rock up for the tree-hugging course I was originally rostered for, but you do have to think beyond yourself sometimes.
If I say no thanks, 300 people have to be put into a hotel and miss a day of their holiday in Africa they paid a huge amount of money for. This makes us look rubbish and people won't come back.. we have an enviable reputation for on-time performance and fantastic feedback from passengers. That keeps me in a job, Mrs. Magnox in convertibles and pays the mortgage. So sometimes, you have to take it on the chin and be 'company-minded'. A horrible phrase and one that smacks of city boys and their huge bonuses, but you'll generally find that airline crews love their jobs, wouldn't swap them for some 'orrible office-based alternative and view people who do with deep suspicion.
In return, all I have to do is fly a 180 tonne airliner from A to B without breaking it or hurting anyone. At the end of the day, we close the doors and walk away. No projects, no deadlines, no office politics, no b/s.
It would be nice to be home sometimes though.... there's a Mexican log-burner in our garden that generates a heat-profile larger than Chernobyll, a gas-powered lamp for late-night Scrabble sessions.
I've done my bit.. next time, the answer is 'No.'

I am sorry to hear this. Many years ago I used to have to work nights and weekends and occasionally in more recent years I have had to work shifts and my husband used to work at lot at weekends and it makes life difficult at times but it makes you appreciate each other and treasure the time you spend together more. But maybe you can celebrate when he gets back and you will have all the fun of planning and anticipating how you can do this.
At least you have Polo to cuddle.
