Forsooth I know not why I am so sad...

Hi All,

No, not really sad at the mo. Just about to book some tickets for me, Piggy and Orangeblossom to go and see The Merchant Of Venice at the Globe in London in August. I've never seen any live Shakespeare, so am looking forward to it and I think the surroundings will do it justice. Can't wait for my pigs ear or chicken foot. I did the play at school and can only remember that the main character - Shylock - is after a pound of flesh and there's a girl - Portia - who dresses up as a man to defend the unlucky victim in court. May have to read it to get me in the mood before I go and also so that I understand what the hell is going on! Think you've never heard of it? Think again...

  Thanks! Hope it won't bring back too many memories of High School though! I think people forget what a genius the man was for his time.

    The thing is though that people forget his plays are full of humour and were designed as entertainment. Generally I think they are taken far too seriously and people don't "enjoy" them. Really they were the soaps of his day.

Oh, Shakespeare live is not to be missed--I saw that "Scottish play" live several years ago, in a theater loosely patterned after the one's in Shakespeare's time--it was fantastic!

Oh, but the Globe--aren't you the fortunate one? Is it the Royal Shakespeare players that I've heard so much about? I'm green with envy.

  I tried to find out who's performing it, but they don't say, so I assume so.
  
  Can't wait. (I am actually really going to invoke an alien spirit on the date the planets are aligned correctly by making Shakespeare write a new play by the power of voodoo - now if I can only get rid of that pesky Doctor....)

That sounds like fun. I once saw a very unusual version of Romeo and Juliet set in space!

It'll be a great experience, Shakespeare live is something else...gave me a love of the bard from the first performance I went to with Olivier playing Othello at the Old Vic many many moons ago now when I used to get free tickets each week at work for a theatre show in London...have a great time...big hugs.

  Thanks Jenray. I reckon Merchant of Venice is - whilst not a comedy - not as serious as Othello or Richard III or something, so should be an excellent introduction to live Shakespeare.

Oh that's cool.

We are doing The Merchant of Venice in the open air at the end of July. My daughter is playing Jessica. It's one of the plays I don't know quite so well so I wish I was going to see it too!

  I think it will all come flooding back for me as I did it at GCSE English Lit back in '87. I can even remember what the cover of the book looked like.
  
  That's the thing with Shakespearean acting - you can ham it up to the max! I hope Jessica has a great time. x

I saw the Dream in the open air at Regent's Park when I was 13. Have seen a few since but I remember that.

Have a great time!

I have seen a few Shakespeare plays over here performed in a park during the summer where you bring some food and wine and sit in the park, eat your dinner and watch the play. Tis great.

You're in for a wonderful time Gil: a great play and an excellent theatre will make the experience almost complete. The last bit is down to you, the audience, to join in with the mood and really enjoy!
