I had a Canon SLR (normal) with a normal lens 35 - 105 mm, but it's pretty old now. I do also have a long distance lens for it too.

In that case it might be worth exploring one of the Canon DSLRs. I'm a died in the wool Nikon man myself, but I've got to say at the cheaper end of the DSLR market I think you get more for your money with Canon.
Now, I'm not sure about Canon, but with Nikon DSLRs you can still use existing lenses in the manual mode. Okay they're not ideal and you tend to get some distortion at times, but it means you get a head start with your new kit. Certainly worth checking out.

A stunningly subtle birthday hint...*cough*
What do you think of the D80, Usk ? The design is a couple of years old now, but there are some cracking deals available which just about punt it into birthday-prezzie territory
Gil knows her way around cameras, properly, but I don't so the reviews on the net don't make much sense to me. As far as I can tell, the Canon equivalent competitor is the 400D.-

I was actually going to say 'this is what I want for my birthday' but I thought that was being too obvious! I would have to see if the normal lenses can be used with the digital, but I assume these things come with lenses anyway.

Not necessarily - lots of places sell the bodies on their own, others bundle in a lens or two. What I do remember is that in the good old days, there was no standard lens fitting so you had to carefully pick what you bought.
It may be that there are adapters available, or everyone's gone to a common standard. I know so little about it, really. Are lenses made specifically for DLSRs because they capture images in a different way to conventional SLRs...?
Here's the short answer:
I know nothing about cameras !-

Me neither. The old lens is a bit old and dirty now anyway.

Hi Miza - Gil already has a spangly Sony thingie, but it's dated now and, although it was top of the range at the time, is really is just a snap camera. I'll be pinching it though, 'cos it'd do me fine
Point... shoot... picture.. yay ! Two bits of gadgetry have passed me by - mobile phones and cameras. Know nothing about either !
As to getting the best - I'll be relying on other people's experience so a Samsung Vega and a bonus block of cheese it is
I can spend the savings on my Volvo... *cough*-

Same here

As far as it works I'm happy. And my samsung is not even a digital camera, still on the film era, hoping for a thoughtful hubbie to have a "snap" idea
But I must say it is a very good camera and so far I haven't seen digital pics with superior quality
Tenga cuidado con el sol en Mexico

The D80 is a great piece of kit. I have a pretty good relationship with my supplier so when I was looking for a new camera last year the Nikon D80 is one of those I tried. I almost bought it too, but the deal I was offered on the D200 was simply too good to miss.
There's a great site for reviews written in fairly easy to understand English. The review for the D80 can be found at: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Nikon/nikon_d80.asp
Make sure you have a look at the sample gallery.

Hmm, personally I have a Canon I'm very happy with, but to be mildly traitorous I think at some levels Nikon are just clinching it at the moment.
The new Canon 450D or the little brother 400D are potentially two of the best "starter" cameras, but in fact moving up though the higher levels actually Nikon might have the edge right now.
If you go on Flickr it actually has a camera section where you can look up makes of cameras and see pictures taken with each specific model.
Really depends how much you're looking at spending and what you want it for.
I'd say whether you get a Canon or a Nikon you'll pick up a quality camera with good support for lenses/extras, I personally wouldn't go the route of a Pentax/Sony/Fuji.-

Thanks AJ, everyone says that the Nikon is the best Digital SLR out there at the moment - I'll have a ponder, cheers.

No probs.
By the way, the answer to your above query about the lenses is to check the designation, if it's an FD lens it won't work without an adaptor and it sorta becomes a moot point, if it's an EF lens it'll probably work.
Although depending on what you want to us it for 35 might be a little long, the sensors on DSLRs are smaller so have a "crop factor" on them of x1.6, so a 100mm lens is actually 160mm so that would make your lens start at 56mm, maybe a bit too telephoto for your liking.
Course you might have already known that...
but it's something to keep in mind when buying lenses, if you're used to film camera focal lengths you might get tripped up.-
- 17/03/2008 @ 14:26:56
Thanks AJ - at least now I'll know what the coded email that says simply 'D80' or '450D', that arrives when I'm somewhere in Mexico a week before Gil's birthday, means...

Re the DSLR... have you any existing lenses that might be useful, or will you be starting from scratch?
